TRAVELING between SAN DIEGO, CA and ROSARITO, Mexico

NOTES:  Several items to consider before you travel:

IDENTIFICATION: Passports are required starting June 1, 2009. You might purchase from PassPortVisasExpress.com. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has put together a very simple web site http://www.getyouhom.gov/

MOTORCOACH SERVICE: You can try the MEXvolleyball Party Bus (not associated with the tournament or Committee in any way), or Mexicoach http://www.mexicoach.com

MAPS: You should print the directions on this page. You might also consider getting maps of San Diego, Tijuana, and Rosarito, and one of Baja California. That's a little overkill because our maps and directions should suffice, but on the other hand, you can't over prepare to go to another country... especially if you've never been there before.

GASOLINE:  Fill up in San Ysidro, the US town adjacent to the border.  Pull off I-5 at via de San Ysidro or I-805 at E. San Ysidro Blvd to find gas stations everywhere.  San Ysidro, although a bit run-down, is generally very safe, especially on the main streets at normal hours.  Most of the businesses cater to border crossers coming north, so much will be in Spanish.

INSURANCE:  It is very advisable to get "Mexican Insurance" if you're going to drive into Mexico. You might get it at DriveMex.com. We actually have little first-hand experience making any claims, but here is some advice on the subject:  you can probably count on insurance sold from US branded gas stations as being reputable.  For example, there is a Mobil station on San Ysidro Blvd a few blocks south of I-5 (on the right side of the street).  A more convenient way is "Instant Mexico Tours" that can fax a copy of your policy before you even leave home.  Expect to pay about $35 for the weekend for insurance.

Driving Directions to Rosarito Beach from San Diego

Getting to Rosarito Beach is part of the enjoyment of visiting Baja California. From San Diego, take Interstate Highway 5 or Interstate 805 south to the San Ysidro, California border crossing (at Tijuana).

There will be various freeway exit signs along the way including one reading ’Last U.S. Exit.’ If you continue driving, the freeway takes you right into Mexico.

There are two roads that will bring you to Rosarito Beach. The toll road (cuota) and the free (libre) road. The well maintained toll road is faster and easier with beautiful ocean views. The toll highway is also patrolled by the ’Green Angels,’ a mobile mechanic that will assist you in the event you have mechanical problems. There are solar powered call boxes located about every two miles along the toll road. If you need help just pick up the phone and a bilingual operator will provide assistance. Our recommendation is to take the toll road.

To get to the toll road from the border, bear to the right just after entering Mexico. work your way into the right lane as you climb the first small rise.  As the road merges with another lane on the right get over into this lane as soon as possible to avoid missing the exit.

You’ll stay on this road as you climb the first hill. Stay right and keep going straight.

As you drop down into the canyon (known as ’Smugglers Canyon’), you’ll want to take the right turn-off to the road going west (Marked ENSENADA QUOTA which means Ensenada Toll Road). As you merge, get over into the left lane and stay there.

Up another hill and then you’ll come to Playas de Tijuana intersection. Since we are going to Rosarito Beach we’ll stay left and follow the road as it curves left.

Just ahead is the toll booth. A toll fee of approximately $2.35 US dollars will take you all the way to Rosarito Beach. The 17 mile scenic trip will take about fifteen minutes. It is a beautiful trip. Some of northern Baja California’s most spectacular scenery is along this route that glides along the coast with its unblemished views of the Pacific Ocean. You’ll pass a number of real estate developments as well, a testimony to Baja California as a highly desirable location for a vacation or retirement home.

At Rosarito Beach, there are four exits off the toll road. We highly recommend you take the last exit. Prior to the exit there is usually a huge Papas and Beer billboard. There is always a small sign that says Rosarito Sur seconds before you turn sharply off the freeway.

After exiting, take the surface street until it ends. Rosarito Beach hotel is almost directly in front you. For Papas and Beer or Oceana Towers, turn right and go down less than 1/2 mile and turn left when you see El Nido on your left. Papas will be directly in front of you while Oceana will be one block to your right.

The tournament location is between Papas and Beer and the Pacific Ocean. This is a few blocks south of Oceana Towers, and a few blocks north of Rosarito Beach Hotel.

If going South you get to the Rosarito Beach Hotel or "out of town", you have gone a little bit too far.

You’re here! And the most ’funtastic’ experience of your life is about to begin!
